Churches, Monasteries and religious art. Fundamental stages in the development of the Tuscan Maremma

Duration:

one week

Day 1 SATURDAY
  • arrival in the afternoon at farm holiday location in the province of Grosseto
  • welcome drinks
  • assignment of rooms or apartments
  • dinner on the farm
  • presentation of weekly programme with slide show (only for groups) and 
    distribution of information leaftlets and brochures. 
  • overnight stay

Day 2 SUNDAY 

  • breakfast on the farm
  • transfer to Massa Marittima , for a walk through the town’s fascinating medieval centre. Attention will be placed mainly on the visit to the Cathedral of San Cerbone, dating to the mid-12th century, the most eminent example of religous architecture in the Maremma.
  • free for lunch
  • free afternoon
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 3 MONDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • in the morning a visit to the medieval town of Montepescali, where guests can see numerous examples of religious architecture: the Church of San Niccolò, the Church of the Saints Lorenzo and Stefano and the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie.
  • the excursion continues with a visit to the town of Sticciano, a charming town perched on a hill in the local district of Roccastrada where guests can admire the Church of the Santissimo Sacro Cuore di Gesù and the Church of Santa Caterina both, sadly, in disrepair.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon visit to Le Casecce in the local district of Roccastrada and the ruins of the Abbey of Giugnano dedicated to San Salvatore which include only the remains of the crypt and the Cistercian building.
  • the rest of the afternoon is at guests’ disposal for a stroll around Roccastrada which affords a spectacular panorama of the surrounding area. 
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 4 TUESDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • visit to Paganico, the old customs station, from which its name is derived, situated on the “salt road” between Siena and Grosseto, a typical example of a medieval fortress, now a busy and modern centre, featuring interesting city walls and four gateways dating to the 4th century. Of particular interest are the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, the small ruined Church of Poggiarello, also known as the Church of the Madonna delle Febbri or Santa Maria delle Grazie. Visit to the churches of Campagnatico and the Badia Ardenghesca, an ancient monastery situated on the “salt road” near Civitella Marittima.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon visit to an agritourist estate and a chance to taste some local olive oil and other typical products of the area. 
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay 

Day 5 WEDNESDAY

  • breakfast on the farm 
  • visit to the Abbey of San Rabano situated inside the Maremma Regional Nature Park near the village of Alberese, founded in the 11th century by the Benedictine monks.
  • free for lunch
  • free afternoon (we recommend a visit to the Argentario coast, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole)
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 6 THURSDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • departure for Sovana, a unique town of ancient origin which still bears numerous traces of its illustrious history (the Cathedral of San Pietro, 11th-12th century; the Church of Santa Maria, 12th-13th century)
  • transfer to Sorano to visit the medieval village and explore the remarkable historic and natural environment which makes it one of the most fascinating towns in central Italy.(the Fortezza Orsini, 11th-12th century, the medieval Museum and the underground passageways; the Church of San Niccolò, 13th-14th century, the Massa Leopoldino (a high rocky crest) 
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon transfer to Pitigliano, splendid town built on a massive rock of tufa stone, to explore the magical atmosphere of its old streets and its fascinating old Jewish district. ( the Palazzo Orsini,11th-12th century; the Diocesan Museum; the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul)
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 7 FRIDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • visit to the Museo Archeologico e d’Arte of the Maremma in Grosseto, one of the most exhaustive and most famous in Tuscany whose numerous archaeological exhibits illustrate the origins of Grosseto and its outlying territories
  • guests can continue their visit to Grosseto and its monuments (the Medicean walls, the Duomo and the Church of San Francesco) and perhaps do some shopping in the town centre.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon visit to Castiglione della Pescaia, famous seaside resort with its unchanged harbour and medieval town. From the old town, surrounded by impressive walls and towers, there is a magnificent view of the long sandy beaches and the pinewood which runs along the coast as fas as the Maremma Nature Park. There will be a visit to the Eremo di Malavalle (Hermitage), the old mother house of the Order of San Guglielmo where the saint retreated in prayer.
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 8 SATURDAY

  • breakfast on the farm and departure
