SANTA FIORA

This town lies on the Grosseto province’s slopes of Mount Amiata, an area which holds some of the most beautiful artistic and historic works: the Porta del Palazzo, the Church of San Giuseppe; the ruins of the Rocca Aldobrandesca; the Palazzo Comunale; the Sforza Cesarini Palace, in which two series of 16th century frescoes have recently been discovered; the 18th century Church of the Misericordia; the Oratorio (church) of the Madonna delle Nevi dating to the 17th century, which contains a bas-relief of the school of Della Robbia depicting Saints Lucilla and Flora.

SASSOFORTINO

This town, situated within the local district of Roccastrada, was built by Siena in the first half of the 14th century after it had been decided to demolish the nearby Castle of Sassoforte. In the centre of the town a tourist sign indicates the road to the castle, the last part of which is reserved only for pedestrians. The splendid castle ruins are spread over a large area inside a chestnut tree forest.

SATURNIA

Saturnia is situated in the high valley of the River Albegna on a hill overlooking its famous spa waters. This small, quiet Tuscan Maremma town was always inhabited from the Iron Age to the Roman era. Places of interest include the city walls, built by Siena in 1461 on the remains of the Etruscan walls; the Rocca within the walls and a castle inside built at the end of the 19th century.

SCANSANO

Up until the early 20th century, when the hot and humid Maremma summers and consequent outbreaks of malaria made living on the plains dangerously unhealthy, the population of Grosseto along with its local government offices and law courts all moved to Scansano. This unusual mass transfer was called the “Estatura” or “Summerment”. Scansano can be reached from the main Grosseto-Manciano road (SS 322) and lies 28 km south-east of the province’s capital. Places of interest include; the theatre, Sala Castagnoli, designed in 1852; the Palazzo Vaccarecci, one of the most interesting 15th-16th century palaces bearing the family coat-of-arms on the facade. In the local district of Scansano, a few kilometres from the centre, stand the remains of the Etruscan villagge of Ghiaccio Forte. Travelling north from Scansano down towards Grosseto stands the CASTLE OF MONTE PO’ property of the noble Cotone family.

SEGGIANO

This delightful town is situated on an olive-covered hill set in a landscape of deep, wood-covered gullies. At the foot of the town there is an interesting visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Carità, an example of late 16th century Amiata architecture; the chapel of San Rocco, built in the 15th century with its frescoes by Gerolamo di Domenico; the church of San Bartolomeo which holds four beautiful panels, part of a 14th century altar-piece of the School of Siena.

SORANO

With its Etruscan “Via Cave” (road of the grottoes), and impressive medieval Orsini fortifications, this town is one Tuscan Maremma’s most precious jewels. Its neighbouring towns of Sovana and Manciano add to the fascinating atmosphere and importance of the whole area. The town is set on a cliff of tufa rock overlooking the deep valley of the River Lente. The Fortezza Orsini is the most significant monument and an interesting example of Renaissance military architecture.

SOVANA

This is the most famous area of the local distict of Sorano and its origins can be traced back to the 7th century B.C. when the oldest tombs of its Etruscan necropolis were built. A visit to Sovana must include the ruins of the early christian church of San Mamiliano, perhaps the oldest in Sovana, the Bourbon del Monte Palace dating to the 17th century, which incoporated existing structures of the time, blocking the original entrance to the adjacent church of Santa Maria (12th-13th century) containing the famous pre-Romanesque ciborium, dating to the 8th century, the only one of its kind in Tuscany.
