This town was built to protect the narrow strip of land which leads to the Argentario and was still guarded by its strong bastions half a century ago, separated from the mainland with all the characteristics of an actual island. Today, as always, daily life takes place mainly in the historic centre enclosed by the city walls. Along the promenade, or Lungomare delle Crociere, visitors can follow the city walls, the Mura di Levante, as far as the Polveriera Guzman, built in 1692 at the bastion of the same name. Nearby is the 12th century Rocca. Skirting the fortifications next to Porta Nuova one reaches the Bastione d’Arcos built in 1692. Not far away is the Porta a Terra, the old main gateway to the town, once equipped with a drawbridge. On the western seafront are the ruins of the Etruscan walls. The cathedral, Duomo dell’Assunta, overlooks Piazza della Repubblica close by.
