The Belagaio Estate, mentioned as the Castle of the noble Ardengheschi family as far back as 1187, was conquered, together with its court, by Siena in 1202 and in 1438 was annexed to the territories of Siena. Having lost its function as castle it became a farming estate, probably in the 16th century, and is now state property. The castle was entirely rebuilt in the 1800’s.

A few kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia in Buriano there are traces dating back to the 10th century when it belonged to the powerful local Lambardi family. The Romitorio (hermitage) is extremely interesting, built in 1597 by the hermit Blessed Giovanni on the site on which Our Lady was said to have appeared to San Guglielmo, patron saint of the area. There are also numerous medieval ruins in the surrounding area.
